Marvelous Monday’s maintain momentum at Lancaster market, with prices and numbers holding firm.
PRIME HOGGS
Prime hoggs sold to unseen levels at Lancaster Auction this morning, with a top price of £240 per head achieved twice for pens of Beltex cross from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby. A further three pens sold over £200 and an additional ten pens were £170 to £195. Well finished hoggs continued to attract the keenest buyer interest, selling to 441p/kg from M Beresford, Kirkby in Furness with others regularly 380p/kg to 415p/kg, with standard weights 340p/kg to 370p/kg. Hill bred hoggs sold to £158 for Mashams, £152 Cheviots and £145 for Mules. Cheviots sold to 343p/kg, Masham 322p/kg, Lonks 315p/kg and Mules 312p/kg. Several pens of lighter weight hoggs were forward, which sold to £124 and 375p/kg, with light weight hill bred hoggs 275p/kg to 310p/g being £95 to £110.
More hoggs are required every week to fulfil buyer requirements.
CAST SHEEP
Cull sheep maintained the strong trade of recent weeks, with Texel cross to £208 from B&M Slater, Chipping with others £185 to £200. Other stronger mediums ewes were £150 to £180, with lighter weights £128 to £140. Pure hill ewes sold to £156 for Cheviot, £146 Lonks and mediums Swaledale sold to £90.
Cull rams sold to £156, with other harder worked continentals £130 to £150.
